The Stylus SX400 uses a Contact Image Sensor (CIS) scanner, which has a good resolution for a flatbed of 1,200 by 2,400 which results in great scanned images with impressive speed. Epson’s software bundle is pretty comprehensive with photo editing and OCR text recognition software as well as the usual printer drivers. The photo copier makes use of the A4 flatbed scanner and strikes a good balance between quality and speed. It also works without the need for the SX400 to be contacted to a PC. Overall The SX400 is a small improvement on an already good multifunctional printer.

If you’re looking for a cheap inkjet printer then the Epson Stylus D92 certainly fits into that category. Epson D92 ink cartridges however are not so cheap, a set of printer ink cartridges cost the same price as the printer itself, however there are compatibles printer cartridges available for a faction of the cost of the originals. Expensive ink cartridges are not the only problem with the D92, if you’re looking to print any sort of volume with your budget printer then the D92 is definitely not for you. The speed it which it prints is not good at all, Epson claim 25 pages per minute but n the real world its more like 2.5 pages per minute. Photo prints are even worse with a 10×15 photo print taking a jaw dropping five minutes. The quality of the print however is quite good for a printer in this category; it uses the same four colour ink system as used in a lot of other more expensive inkjet printers and therefore uses the same ink cartridges as them (which are expensive). The quality of the machine itself is not bad, it all feels very solid with the exception of the paper feed support which clips into the back of the printers and feels a bit flimsy, but overall the D92 should stand up to some punishment. The Stylus D92 would have been a great little printer had it been a bit quicker in printing but instead its an average one, and for people who need to print multiple page projects its just unsuitable.

Like budget inkjet printers you need to be careful when buying a budget colour laser printer that the printer cartridges are good enough value to justify that cost of the printer. The Samsung CLP-300 is designed for users who do a moderate amount of printing and need something after than an inkjet, Samsung CLP-300 is cheap to buy and the Samsung CLP-300 toner cartridges although smaller than the average Samsung toner cartridges work out to be rather good value. Cost per page works out to be 1.8p for black printing and a not so impressive but still reasonable 8.7p for colour. Each cartridge prints 2,000 pages black and 1,000 colour and they are available in both genuine Samsung and remanufactured form from third party manufactures. The print produced by the CLP-300 is good in black but leaves a bit to be desired when printing high resolution colour images, graphics are fine but photos are a bit beyond its capabilities, having said that laser printers are not known for there great photo printing skills. The same pattern is true for print speed as with print quality with the CLP-300 black printing is impressive with a rate of 16ppm but colour less so with a maximum speed of 4ppm, the reason for this is that the CLP-300 uses a single drum unit which require multiple passes when printing colour and this slows the colour printing considerably, and this a result of making the CLP-300 to a tight budget. The Samsung CLP-300 is a not  a great all round printer it has been specifically designed for a small group of users and if you don’t fit that mould then it not for you and vice versa.
